Transporters in the nervous system are proteins that span the plasma membrane and are involved in movement of ions and molecules across the membrane. They include neurotransmitter transporters, which move neurotransmitters or their metabolites from the extracellular space into a neuron, and vesicular transporters, which are involved in filling synaptic vesicles.
Communication between cells in the nervous system is mainly chemical, through pre-synaptic release of neurotransmitters, diffusion across the synapse, and activation of receptors in the post-synaptic cell. The released molecules, for example glutamate, GABA, serotonin, or dopamine, are subsequently removed from the extracellular space and transported back into the neuron or surrounding glial cells by neurotransmitter transporters. Their removal allows for subsequent release to exert full effect, as well as to localize signaling action to a synapse. Removal also prevents the prolonged presence of high concentrations of neurotransmitter, which can be detrimental in other ways.
Belongs to acetylcholine transporter, the Vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT) is a neurotransmitter transporter which is responsible for loading acetylcholine (ACh) into secretory organelles in neurons making acetylcholine available for secretion. It is a novel and unique marker for cholinergic neurons in the central and peripheral nervous.

VGLUTs are key molecules for the incorporation of glutamate in synaptic vesicles across the nervous system. They are VGLUT1-3 that are encoded by the solute vector gene SLC17A6-8. VGLUT1 was originally named brain-specific Na+-dependent inorganic phosphate co-transporter (BNPI), which is mainly expressed in brain. VGLUT1 is a specific biochemical marker of glutamatergic neurons and glutamatergic synapses.

VGLUTs are key molecules for the incorporation of glutamate in synaptic vesicles across the nervous system. They are VGLUT1-3 that are encoded by the solute vector gene SLC17A6-8. VGLUT2 (SLC17A6) is expressed in glutamatergic neurons of the brain including amygdala, cerebellum, cerebral cortex, hippocampus, frontal lobe, medulla, occipital lobe, putamen and temporal lobe. In addition, VGLUT2 functions as a differential marker for hippocampal output neurons.

Sodium- and chloride-dependent glycine transporter 1, also known as glycine transporter 1, is a glycine transporter that is present in forebrain areas where it terminates glycine activity by mediating its uptake. GlyT1 is associated with both glycinergic and glutamatergic pathways, and is the main regulator of the glycine levels in the synapses. It has been implicated in diseases such as schizophrenia.

Serotonin Transporter (SERT) is a member of the Neurotransmitter-Sodium Symporter (NSS) family and is closely related to transporters for norepinephrine and dopamine, NET, and DAT, respectively. The function of SERT is to take up serotonin (5-HT) released by the activity of serotonergic neurons. It is located presynaptically on serotonergic axon terminals and are believed to serve as an index of serotonergic innervation.
