The active zone is the region in the presynaptic bouton that mediates neurotransmitter release and is composed of the presynaptic membrane and a dense collection of proteins called the cytomatrix at the active zone (CAZ). The synaptic active zone contains distinct proteins such as piccolo, bassoon, SNAP25 and syntaxin. Immunostaining of the synaptic active zone utilizes presynaptic markers specific to those unique proteins.
Synaptosomal-associated protein-25 (SNAP25) is a presynaptic protein that takes part in vesicular exocytosis, neurite outgrowth, and long-term potentiation.
