Dopaminergic neuron is a nerve cell which sends messages by using the neurotransmitter dopamine. Dopaminergic neurons of the midbrain are the main source of dopamine (DA) in the mammalian central nervous system. Their loss is associated with one of the most prominent human neurological disorders, Parkinson's disease (PD). Dopaminergic neurons are found in a 'harsh' region of the brain, the substantia nigra pars compacta, which is DA-rich and contains both redox available neuromelanin and a high iron content. Although their numbers are few, these dopaminergic neurons play an important role in the control of multiple brain functions including voluntary movement and a broad array of behavioral processes such as mood, reward, addiction, and stress.
Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) is a member of the aromatic amino acid hydroxylase (AAAH) family. It is expressed throughout the central nervous system (CNS) and catalyzes the conversion of tyrosine to L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA). Tyrosine hydroxylase is a marker for dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine-containing (catecholamine) neurons and endocrine cells.

Folate receptor 1 (Folate receptor alpha, FOLR1) is a protein that is responsible for binding to folic acid and its derivatives, which becomes crucial during fetal development. It is a GPI-anchored cell surface molecule, specifically marks midbrain dopaminergic neurons (mesDA) neural progenitors and immature mesDA neurons.

The dopamine transporter (also dopamine active transporter, DAT, SLC6A3) is a membrane-spanning protein that pumps the neurotransmitter dopamine out of the synaptic cleft back into cytosol. DAT is implicated in a number of dopamine-related disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, clinical depression, alcoholism, and substance use disorder.
