Neurotransmitters are any of a group of chemical agents released by neurons (nerve cells) to stimulate neighbouring neurons or muscle or gland cells, thus allowing impulses to be passed from one cell to the next throughout the nervous system.
Based on chemical and molecular properties, the major classes of neurotransmitters include amino acids, such as glutamate and glycine; monoamines, such as dopamine and norepinephrine; peptides, such as somatostatin and opioids; and purines, such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Some gaseous substances, such as nitric oxide, can also act as neurotransmitters, as can endogenous substances known as trace amines, which are related chemically to the monoamines; examples include tryptamine and the phenethylamines.
Acetylcholine, a substance synthesized by neurons, is the primary neurotransmitter of the parasympathetic nervous system, which controls smooth muscle contraction and blood vessel dilation and slows heart rate.

Glutamate is the primary excitatory transmitter in the central nervous system. Glutamate also serves as a precursor for gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) synthesis in the brain. Glutamate has been implicated in modifiable synapses, which researchers suspect are the memory-storage elements of the brain.

Dopamine plays an essential role in several brain functions, including learning, motor control, reward, emotion, and executive functions. Dopamine has also been implicated in psychiatric and neurological disorders. A dopamine deficiency can cause Parkinson's disease.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a mood regulator. It has an inhibitory action, which stops neurons from becoming overexcited. GABA is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.

Serotonin is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It helps regulate mood, appetite, blood clotting, sleep, and the body's circadian rhythm. Serotonin plays a role in depression and anxiety. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, can relieve depression by increasing serotonin levels in the brain.

| DPBT-66744RS | Anti-Serotonin polyclonal antibody | H, R | IHC |
| DPBT-66746SS | Anti-Serotonin polyclonal antibody | H | ELISA, WB |
Glycine is the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter found in the spinal cord.
Norepinephrine is a monoamine that is synthesized in the central nervous system and sympathetic nerves. The locus coeruleus of the brain plays a vital role in the signaling of norepinephrine. The release of norepinephrine in the brain exerts effects on a variety of processes, including stress, sleep, attention, focus, and inflammation. It also plays a role in modulating the responses of the autonomic nervous system.
