Zinc is an essential trace element that plays a vital role in maintaining many biological processes and cellular homeostasis. In most cell types grown under normal conditions, the vast majority of intracellular zinc is bound to proteins and serves in essential structural or catalytic roles. Zinc transporter proteins (Zrt), or simply zinc transporters, are membrane transport proteins of the solute carrier family which control the membrane transport of zinc and regulate its intracellular and cytoplasmic concentrations. They include two major groups:
Zinc transporter 1 is a protein which in humans is encoded by the SLC30A1 gene. SLC30A1 modulates zinc permeation through the L-type calcium channel. SLC30A1 downregulates not only Zn2+ influx, but also Ca2+ influx, thereby protecting cells from the effects of excessive cation permeation.

Zinc transporter 3 also known as solute carrier family 30 member 3 is a protein in humans that is encoded by the SLC30A3 gene. ZnT-3 is required for the accumulation of zinc ions inside synaptic vesicles. In mice, ZnT-3 is required for some forms of memory that depend on the hippocampus and the amygdala. Zinc transport by ZnT-3 modulates memory formation by acting through the extracellular signal-regulated kinases signaling pathway.

| CABT-B1793 | Anti-ZNT3 (Cytoplasmic domain) polyclonal antibody | H, M | WB, EM, IF, IHC |
| DCABH-842 | Anti-SLC30A3 monoclonal antibody, clone 3I7 | H | WB, FC, ICC/IF |
ZNT8 is a zinc transporter related to insulin secretion in humans. Certain alleles of the SLC30A8 gene may increase the risk for developing type 2 diabetes, but a loss-of-function mutation appears to greatly reduce the risk of diabetes.

Zinc transporter ZIP1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SLC39A1 gene. It is responsible for the active transport of zinc into prostate cells. In many prostate cancers SLC39A1 is silenced causing prostate cancer cells to be low in zinc. Zip1 has been shown to be the major zinc uptake system in K562 erythroleukemia cells and in prostate cells. Zip1 is localized to the plasma membrane in some cell types but not in others perhaps owing to the zinc-responsive regulation of this protein's subcellular localization. In zinc-deficient cells, Zip1 migrates to the plasma membrane while it is found associated with intracellular compartments in zinc-replete cells.

Zinc transporter ZIP4 is a transmembrane protein which in humans is encoded by the SLC39A4 gene. The Zip4/SLC39A4 protein has been found to be an important transporter for the acquisition of zinc from the diet. Mutations in the SLC39A4 gene is related to a human genetic disease, acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE). Patients with AE were found to have mutations in the SLC39A4 gene that disrupt the zinc transport function of the protein.

SLC39A6, also known as LIV-1, belongs to a new subfamily of Zrt-, Irt-like protein zinc transporters (LZTs). Overexpression of this protein is observed in breast, prostate, and kidney tumor cells. Lately, LIV-1 is a dependable marker for detection of estrogen receptor positive breast cancer, which can be used to detect luminal breast cancer type A.
