Introduction
Iron-regulated surface determinant protein B (IsdB) is a cell wall-anchored receptor in Staphylococcus aureus that captures heme from host hemoglobin (Hb) during iron starvation. It extracts heme via its NEAT domains and transfers it to IsdA/IsdC for iron internalization, enabling bacterial proliferation in iron-limited host environments. IsdB also enhances resistance to hydrogen peroxide and neutrophil killing. Its immunogenicity supports vaccine development, with truncated IsdB (tIsdB) chimeras eliciting robust protective immunity in preclinical studies.
