Introduction
Serine-aspartate repeat-containing protein E (SdrE) is a cell wall-anchored adhesin in Staphylococcus aureus belonging to the MSCRAMM family. It binds host extracellular matrix proteins (e.g., fibrinogen, complement factor H) via its ligand-binding domain, facilitating bacterial attachment, immune evasion, and biofilm formation . SdrE also inhibits complement-mediated opsonization by hijacking factor H, enhancing bloodstream survival . Its surface exposure and role in virulence make it a vaccine candidate; antibodies against SdrE reduce bacterial loads in experimental endocarditis models .
