Introduction

Mumps is one of the commonly acquired viral diseases of childhood and is the most common cause of aseptic meningitis. However, its incidence in developed countries has declined dramatically since the advent of vaccination. A member of the paramyxovirus family, it is closely related to parainfluenza viruses. Its genome is ss RNA of 16 - 18 kbp, and it is an enveloped virus of helical symmetry. The single RNA molecule, in a helical nucleocapsid, is in association with the nucleoprotein (NP). M protein forms the structure which underlies the viral envelope. The HN (haemagglutination and neuraminidase protein) and the F (fusion) protein form the spikes present on the lipid bilayer envelope. Only one serotype of the virus exists. There is significant antigenic cross-reaction with other members of the paramyxovirus genus.

E-J properties of Bi2212 tape in the practical current region

Abstract

In order to investigate the E-J properties in a practical current region, we performed the E-J measurement for a PAIR processed Bi2212 short sample using a pulsed current power supply. We could measure the E-J properties in a wide range of electric fields from 0.05 to 100 muV cm(-1) at transport currents up to a few tens of amperes without the thermal effect due to the Joule heating in a cryocooling condition.

Expression pattern and first functional characterization of riok-1 in Caenorhabditis elegans

Abstract

Rio kinases are atypical serine/threonine kinases that emerge as potential cooperation partners in Ras-driven tumors. In the current study, we performed an RNAi screen in Caenorhabditis. elegans to identify suppressors of oncogenic Ras signaling. Aberrant Ras/Raf signaling in C elegans leads to the formation of a multi-vulva (Muv) phenotype. We found that depletion of riok-1, the C elegans orthologue of the mammalian RioK1, suppressed the Muv phenotype. By using a promoter GFP construct, we could show that riok-1 is expressed in neuronal cells, the somatic gonad, the vulva, the uterus and the spermatheca. Furthermore, we observed developmental defects in the gonad upon riok-1 knockdown in a wildtype background. Our data suggest that riok-1 is a modulator of the Ras signaling pathway, suggesting implications for novel interventions in the context of Ras-driven tumors. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.
