General Description
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a chronic autoimmune thyroid disorder characterized by the production of autoantibodies that target thyroid antigens, leading to inflammation and gradual destruction of thyroid tissue. This results in hypothyroidism, with symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, and dry skin. The diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis relies on clinical presentation and the detection of specific autoantibodies. Key autoantibodies include:
Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb)
Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb)
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are also called anti-TPO antibodies or TPO antibodies. Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies are a type of thyroid antibody which is the key enzyme that catalyzes the iodination and coupling of tyrosine residues during thyroid hormone synthesis. TPOAb can Inhibit TPO enzymatic activity, thereby impairing the synthesis of T4 and T3. Correlate strongly with lymphocytic infiltration of the thyroid gland. Serve as the most sensitive serologic marker of thyroid autoimmunity.
