Abstract
A series of vanillin derivatives incorporating a bis(2-hydroxyethyl)dithioacetal moiety was designed and synthesized via a facile method. A plausible reaction pathway was proposed and verified by computational studies. Bioassay results demonstrated that target compounds possessed good to excellent activities against potato virus Y (PVY) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), of which, compound 6f incorporating a bis(2-hydroxyethyl)dithioacetal moiety, exhibited the best curative and protection activities against PVY and CMV in vivo, with 50% effective concentration values of 217.6, 205.7 mu g/mL and 206.3, 186.2 mu g/mL, respectively, better than those of ribavirin (848.0, 808.1 mu g/mL and 858.2, 766.5 mu g/mL, respectively), dufulin (462.6, 454.8 mu g/mL and 471.2, 465.4 mu g/mL, respectively), and ningnanmycin (440.5, 425.3,mu g/mL and 426.1, 405.3 mu g/mL, respectively). Current studies provide support for the application of vanillin derivatives incorporating bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-dithioacetal as new antiviral agents.

Abstract
Potato virus Y (PVY) is the most common virus infecting potato worldwide. We analysed potato tuber PVY infections from the major Israeli growing region in 2014-2017. Isolates were characterized by multiplex PCR according to Chikh-Ali et al. (Plant Disease97, 1370, 2013), whose primers were not fully compatible with the Israeli isolates. New primers were designed for a multiplex PCR assay to differentiate the Israeli isolates. Three recombinant strains were observed: PVYNTNa (72% of the isolates), PVYNWi (24%) and PVYSyr-III (found only in 2015). The archetypal PVYO strain was found only once. The classical PVY strains have recently been displaced by recombinant forms, with PVYNTNa dominating. The Israeli isolates appear very similar to those of Europe (the seed tuber source), except for PVYSyr-III.
