Introduction
Virginiamycin is a streptogramin-class antibiotic complex produced by Streptomyces virginiae, consisting mainly of two synergistic components: virginiamycin M (streptogramin A) and virginiamycin S (streptogramin B). It exerts a potent antibacterial effect by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis through a dual-mechanism action. Owing to its strong activity against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus and Enterococcus species, virginiamycin has been widely used in veterinary medicine and as a feed additive. Its well-defined structure and ribosome-targeted mode of action also make it an important reference compound in antimicrobial resistance research and translational studies on protein synthesis inhibitors.
