General Description
Virginiamycin is a streptogramin antibiotic. It is a combination of pristinamycin IIA (virginiamycin M1) and virginiamycin S1. M1 is a macrolide and S1 is a cyclic polypeptide. Virginiamycin as an anticoccidial drug that can effectively inhibit protein synthesis in Gram-positive bacteria (such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Sar). Because the cell walls of Gram-negative bacteria are impermeable, virginiamycin is less effective against most Gramnegative bacteria, especially Enterobacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. Virginiamycin has now been widely used in animal feed additives. (Crooy P., et al., 1972; Maciel, I. C. F., et al.,2019)
