General Description

rimethoprim is an antifolate antibiotic often used in combination with sulfamethoxazole to treat a number of infections, including those of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, and gastrointestinal tract. In animal husbandry, single use of trimethoprim can induce microbial resistance. Therefore, trimethoprim is widely used in combination with sulfa drugs or other antibiotics for the treatment of animal diseases, including fowl cholera, respiratory tract secondary bacterial infection, and pullorum disease. When administered with sulfa drugs, the efficacy of trimethoprim is increased by 10 times. However, overuse of trimethoprim leads to the presence of drug residues in food, causing consumers to develop antibiotic resistance, nausea, vomiting, headaches, itching, and allergic reactions.
