GUCY1B3 Full Name
guanylate cyclase 1, soluble, beta 3
GUCY1B3 Introduction
GUCY1B3 gene produces a subunit which unites with additional subunits to create soluble guanylate cyclase (sGC) that functions as a nitric oxide (NO) signaling mediator. The enzyme sGC exists as a heterodimeric complex which includes alpha and beta subunits and GUCY1B3 forms part of the beta subunit. The enzyme GUCY1B3 converts GTP into cGMP through its catalytic activity which produces the second messenger cGMP. The enzyme GUCY1B3 exists in cardiovascular tissues and nervous system cells and smooth muscle cells because it plays a vital role in NO signaling pathways.

Functionally, GUCY1B3 is essential for maintaining vascular homeostasis and regulating smooth muscle relaxation. The beta 3 subunit enables sGC enzyme sensitivity and catalytic activity through its ability to create an active enzyme complex after nitric oxide binding. The signaling pathway regulates blood pressure and vascular tone and tissue perfusion and controls both blood pressure and vascular tone and tissue perfusion and influences neurotransmission and synaptic plasticity. The abnormal operation of GUCY1B3 or sGC enzymes disrupts NO signaling which results in abnormal cGMP levels that affect multiple organ systems' normal physiological responses.
Research shows that GUCY1B3 expression patterns and enzyme function changes lead to cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. The reduced sGC activity in GUCY1B3-related impaired vasodilation causes blood pressure elevation which results in atherosclerosis and heart failure development. Research shows this protein causes neurodegenerative diseases because it serves as a neuronal signaling molecule. The drug target potential of GUCY1B3 exists because sGC stimulators and activators can treat conditions that result from NO-sGC pathway deficiencies by restoring cGMP signaling.
