General Description
Spiramycin is a macrolide antibiotic with activity primarily against Staphylococcus aureus, beta-hemolytic streptococci, and viridans streptococci. As an important antibiotic, growth promoter, and antiparasitic drug, spiramycin has been widely used in clinical treatment, veterinary medicine, and agricultural crop protection. It is available as a spiramycin embonate for use in animal feed, and as the adipate, a more soluble form, for administration by other routes. However, due to issues such as abuse and illegal addition, the residual levels of this drug have been found to exceed regulatory limits in animal-source foods including milk, honey, animal tissues, and eggs. (WHO/FAO, Joint Meeting on Food Additives, 1991)
