Osteoprotegerin is the decoy receptor which binds and thereby opposes RANK ligand, another cytokine which activates osteoclasts and causes bone resorption. One report contains suggestive evidence of pathogenic autoantibodies against osteoprotegerin that cause osteoporosis.
