Introduction

S100B is a small, dimeric calcium-binding protein belonging to the S100 family, encoded by the S100B gene located on human chromosome 21q22.3. It consists of two EF-hand motifs per monomer, with each subunit approximately 10.5 kDa, forming an acidic homodimer that undergoes conformational changes upon calcium binding to expose a hydrophobic patch for target interactions. Primarily expressed in astrocytes of the central nervous system, S100B also appears in oligodendrocytes, Schwann cells, melanocytes, and non-neural tissues such as chondrocytes and adipocytes, with notably high levels in brain and adipose tissues.
