Amyloid β Peptide (1-40), human is a 40-residue peptide associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and in aged individuals with Down's syndrome, where pathology is driven by an extra copy of chromosome 21. This peptide is a proteolytic fragment of the larger amyloid precursor protein (APP), which is encoded by a gene on chromosome 21. Structurally, it includes a large extracellular N-terminal domain, a short hydrophobic transmembrane region, and a brief C-terminal segment. Beta-APP encompasses and contributes to the transmembrane region of the peptide.
