General Description
Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) is a major component of myelin, accounting for about 30% of myelin protein. It is synthesized and secreted by oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS). In demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), MBP is released into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood, triggering an immune response.
The concentration of MBP and its antibodies in serum or CSF can serve as specific biochemical indicators of acute brain injury and acute demyelinating diseases. The levels reflect the extent and severity of the damage.
MBP antibody testing helps differentiate MS from other neurological conditions. For example, in neuromyelitis optica (NMO), the positivity rate for AQP4 antibodies is higher, while that for MBP antibodies is lower.
