Alternariol is a toxic metabolite of Alternaria fungi. It is an important contaminant in cereals and fruits. Alternariol has been found in 31% of samples of feed and agricultural commodities in Europe (n = 300), with concentrations ranging from 6.3 to 1840 μg/kg. Only limited data regarding the toxicity of alternariol exist, but the acute toxicity of alternariol is considered to be low. In contrast to the in vivo findings, there is evidence for genotoxic effects of alternariol in vitro. Alternariol induces several types of DNA damage in vitro including single-stranded DNA breaks (SSB), double-stranded breaks (DSB) as well as oxidative DNA damage.
