Ferritin has two subunits, heavy and light, that are 21 and 19 kD, respectively. There are 25 different isoforms of ferritin combining different combinations of the two. The native molecule is 420-450 kDa, depending on the isoform. On a very long SDS-PAGE gel it is possible to resolve the two subunits; otherwise only a band of ~20 kD is seen. There might also be a band around 25 kD which is a charge variant. Moreover, a dimer at 40 kD can sometimes be seen. Cross reactivity against Ferritin from other tissues and species may occur but have not been specifically determined.
