This gene encodes a protein possessing an RNA helicasemotif containing a DEXH box in its amino terminus and an RNA motifin the carboxy terminus. The encoded protein functions as aribonuclease and is required by the RNA interference and smalltemporal RNA (stRNA) pathways to produce the active small RNAcomponent that represses gene expression. Alternative splicingresults in multiple transcript variants.
