PUMA is localised to the mitochondria, binds BCL-2 and induces cytochrome C release and apoptosis in response to p53. PUMA is indeed an essential mediator of p53-dependent and -independent apoptosis in vivo, mediates the apoptotic response to p53 in colorectal cancer cells and is degraded during Chlamydia trachomatis infection
