S-Adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM or SAMe) is a naturally occurring compound that serves as a universal methyl group donor in numerous biochemical processes, including DNA, RNA, protein, lipid, and neurotransmitter methylation. It is synthesized in the body from methionine and ATP, primarily in the liver. SAM plays a key role in maintaining cellular methylation balance and is involved in detoxification, gene regulation, and neurotransmitter metabolism. It is also available as a dietary supplement and is used to support liver health, mood regulation, and joint function.
