It belongs to the staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) family and is a major cause of staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) worldwide. SEA is classified as a superantigen due to its unique ability to trigger massive, non-specific activation of T-cells, leading to severe immune responses.
