Introduction
Staphylococcus aureus Beta-Lactamase (BlaZ) is an enzyme that hydrolyzes β-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillin) by breaking their β-lactam ring, conferring penicillin resistance in >90% of MRSA isolates. Encoded by the plasmid-borne blaZ gene, its expression is regulated by the BlaR1-BlaI system, where β-lactam-bound BlaR1 cleaves BlaI to trigger synthesis.
