Abstract
BackgroundThe causes of anaemia in patients with end-stage renal disease include a relative deficiency in erythropoietin production and complex clinical conditions. We aimed to investigate the underlying mechanisms of anaemia in patients with end-stage renal disease who were undergoing maintenance dialysis by measuring erythrocyte creatine levels.MethodsIn a cross-sectional study, we evaluated 69 patients with end-stage renal disease who were receiving haemodialysis (n=55) or peritoneal dialysis (n=14). Erythrocyte creatine level, a quantitative marker of mean red blood cell (RBC) age, was measured.ResultsThe mean RBC age was significantly shorter in the haemodialysis group than in the peritoneal dialysis group (47.7days vs. 59.8days, p<0.0001), although the haemoglobin levels were comparable between the groups. A Spearman correlation coefficient analysis revealed that shortened RBC age positively correlated with transferrin saturation (r=0.54), ferritin level (r=0.47), and haptoglobin level (r=0.39) but inversely related with reticulocyte (r=-0.36), weekly doses of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs; r=-0.62), erythropoietin resistance index (r=-0.64), and intradialytic ultrafiltration rate (r=-0.32).ConclusionsShortened RBC age was observed in patients who were receiving maintenance haemodialysis and was associated with iron deficiency, greater haptoglobin consumption, higher ESA requirements, and poor erythropoietin responsiveness, as well as with greater intradialytic fluid extraction.

Abstract
A feeding trial was conducted to explore the effect of dietaryHouttuynia cordataleaf extract (HCLE) and leaf meal (HCLM) on immunological responses and expression of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) gene inLabeo rohitafingerlings. Six isonitrogenous (350 g/kg CP) and isocaloric (17 MJ/kg DE) purified experimental diets were formulated withHouttuynia cordataleaf extract and leaf meal comprising control, C (0 g/kg HCLE and HCLM), E2.5 (2.5 g/kg HCLE), E5 (5 g/kg HCLE), E10 (10 g/kg HCLE), M10 (10 g/kg HCLM) and M20 (20 g/kg HCLM).Labeo rohitafingerlings (3.37 +/- 0.23 g) were distributed in six experimental groups in triplicates following the complete random distribution. Fish were fed twice daily with respective experimental diets for a period of 60 days. A significantly (p < .05) lower lactate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were registered in supplemented groups compared with control group, while respiratory burst and lysozyme activities were significantly (p < .05) higher in E10 group compared with other experimental groups. Haemoglobin, total leucocyte count, total erythrocyte count and haematocrit values were significantly (p < .05) higher in E10 group. The expression of IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha in both the kidney and liver was significantly up-regulated in leaf extract and meal supplemented groups with the highest expression in the fish of E10 group. Overall, these results suggest that the dietary supplementation of ethanolic extract of theHouttuynia cordataleaf at 10 g/kg level can enhance the immune response ofL. rohitafingerlings.
