Okadaic acid is a lipophilic polyether marine toxin produced by dinoflagellates such as Prorocentrum and Dinophysis. It is a potent inhibitor of serine/threonine protein phosphatases 1 and 2A, resulting in hyperphosphorylation of cellular proteins. Okadaic acid is responsible for diarrhetic shellfish poisoning in humans. It is also widely used as a biochemical tool in cell signaling research and tumor promotion studies due to its specific enzymatic inhibition profile.
