Introduction

The heparin-binding growth factors are angiogenic agents in vivo and are potent mitogens for a variety of cell types in vitro. There are differences in the tissue distribution and concentration of these 2 growth factors.

Antigen Description

Basic fibroblast growth factor, alsoknown as bFGF, FGF2 or FGF-β, is a member of the fibroblast growth factorfamily. bFGF is a critical component of human embryonic stem cell culturemedium; the growth factor is necessary for the cells to remain in anundifferentiated state, although the mechanisms by which it does this arepoorly defined. It has been demonstrated to induce gremlin expression whichin turn is known to inhibit the induction of differentiation by bonemorphogenetic proteins. It is necessary in mouse-feeder cell dependentculture systems, as well as in feeder and serum-free culture systems
