Abstract
As the digital transformation develops, OPC UA is establishing itself as a key technology for industrial communications, cyberphysical production systems and applications for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The fast semantics project shows that an OPC UA server implemented in hardware makes this technology accessible even for the smallest embedded devices. This paper outlines requirements for semantic communications in current and future applications in order to investigate the consistent use of OPC UA from the field level, via classic SCADA systems, to the cloud.

Abstract
This paper presents the results of an experimental setup to determine the effects of MQTT on the message latency in a small industrial application. Three different system architectures differing in the distribution of publishers and subscribers in the network are examined under different load scenarios. From the results it can be derived that the influence of routing and network load have a stronger impact on message latency than the architecture of the MQTT system, owing to the properties of the underlying network layers, namely TCP and IP. The results indicate that if these factors are under control, MQTT can be applied for industrial communication despite lacking hard realtime properties. The application of TSN to solve this issue is discussed in the light of the results.
