General Notes
This product (Catalog No. DPABH-24165) is a rabbit-derived polyclonal antibody raised against human MAEL. It has been affinity purified by Protein A. The Maelstrom gene (MAEL), also known as maelstrom, encodes a protein that functions as a key component of the nuage, a germ cell-specific organelle, and plays an essential role in the piRNA (Piwi-interacting RNA) pathway to silence transposable elements (TEs) and maintain genomic stability during gametogenesis. Originally identified in Drosophila melanogaster through mutants exhibiting defects in oocyte axis specification and mRNA localization, such as ectopic expression of oskar and gurken transcripts, the gene is conserved across metazoans, including mammals, where it is critical for spermatogenesis. In humans, the MAEL gene is located on chromosome 1p36.31. In mice, Mael knockout results in male infertility due to meiotic arrest in prophase I, widespread germ cell apoptosis, and derepression of retrotransposons like LINE-1 elements, leading to nuclear invasion of L1 ribonucleoproteins and DNA double-strand breaks independent of meiotic recombination.
DPABH-24165 is suitable for use in Western blot (WB) (1:500–1:1,000) application.
DPABH-24165 is supplied as a liquid formulation in PBS (without Mg2+ and Ca2+), pH 7.4, 150mM NaCl, 0.02% sodium azide and 50% glycerol. For long-term storage, keep at −20 °C. For short-term use, store at 2–8 °C. Avoid repeated freeze–thaw cycles to maintain antibody integrity and performance.
