The viral capsid antigen of EBV is abundantly expressed in cells undergoing productive infection, and it has polypeptide and glycoprotein components ranging in size from 26 to 200 kDa, with a 143kDa polypeptide (BNRF1 reading frame) being the major component. The membrane antigen complex is found on the virion envelope and consists of at least three major EBV induced glycoproteins: gp350/220, gp125, and gp85. gp125, encoded by BALF4, is found in abundance in the cell nucleus and in the endoplasmic reticulum but it is not a major structural protein of the virion.
