This gene is expressed in the inner ear and bladder epithelium, and it is over-expressed in colorectal carcinomas. This protein and claudin 2 are critical for vitamin D-dependent Ca2+ absorption between enterocytes. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been found.
Antigen Description
Claudins, such as CLDN12, are components of epithelial cell tight junctions. Tight junctions regulate movement of solutes and ions through the paracellular space and prevent mixing of proteins and lipids in the outer leaflet of the apical and basolateral plasma membrane domains (Acharya et al. , 2004). Plays a major role in tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space, through calcium-independent cell-adhesion activity. Claudin-12 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the CLDN12 gene.
