General Description
Tricaine is an anaesthetic that operates by preventing sodium ions to enter the cell and thus silencing action potentials. This has the net effect of blocking signal exchange between the brain and extremities. Tricaine is used for anesthesia, sedation, or euthanasia of fish and is the only anesthetic licensed in the United States for fin fish that are intended for human consumption. However, the use of tricaine during sunlight exposure can induce fish lesions, leading to toxicity and water pollution. Moreover, despite the significant advantages of tricaine in fish transportation, it is known that water products containing residue can cause cancer, allergic reactions or affect human hematopoietic function. Therefore, determining the residual tricaine in water and water products is essential. (Carter K. M., et al., 2010; Vera L. M., et al., 2010)
