General Description
Tigecycline is an tetracycline antibiotic medication for a number of bacterial infections and is a member of the glycylcycline antibiotic class of drugs.. As a tetracycline derivative antibiotic, its structural modifications has expanded its therapeutic activity to include Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms, including those of multi-drug resistance. Tigecycline is used to treat different kinds of bacterial infections, including complicated skin and structure infections, complicated intra-abdominal infections and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia. When given to humans intravenously, tigecycline distributes widely, which leads to low plasma concentrations in the body. In fact, 59% of its original dose is excreted through bile, and patients with liver insufficiency need to have their doses adjusted. In addition, the FDA has issued a warning that this drug carries the risk of increasing overall mortality.(Rose W. E., et al., 2006; Rodvold K. A., et al., 2006)
