Glyoxal
Glyoxal Full Name
Glyoxal
Glyoxal Introduction
Glyoxal is the simplest dialdehyde, with the chemical formula OCHCHO. It is a yellow-colored liquid at room temperature with a pungent, suffocating odor and is highly reactive due to its two aldehyde functional groups. Glyoxal is miscible with water, and in aqueous solutions, it exists primarily in various hydrated forms, including oligomers. Its high reactivity stems from its electrophilic carbonyl carbons, making it a versatile cross-linking agent and a valuable building block in organic synthesis.

Major Applications and Uses
Glyoxal's primary industrial value lies in its ability to form cross-links with compounds containing hydroxyl, amino, or amido groups. Its largest application is in the textile and paper industries as a cross-linking agent for durable press (wrinkle-resistant) fabrics and for improving the wet strength of paper. It is also a key intermediate in the synthesis of various chemicals, including pharmaceuticals (e.g., allopurinol), herbicides, and dyes. Furthermore, it serves as a precursor for organic compounds like imidazoles and as a cross-linker in polymer chemistry.
Reactivity and Cross-linking Mechanism
The primary industrial value of glyoxal lies in its exceptional reactivity as a cross-linking agent. Because it possesses two reactive aldehyde groups, it can act as a molecular bridge, bonding simultaneously with two other functional groups—such as hydroxyls (-OH), amines (-NH2), or amides. This ability allows glyoxal to link polymer chains together, transforming soluble polymers into insoluble networks or increasing the mechanical strength of materials. This mechanism is particularly effective in biological macromolecules like proteins and carbohydrates (cellulose and starch), making glyoxal a fundamental tool for modifying material properties.
