Sodium deoxycholate is the sodium salt of deoxycholic acid, a secondary bile salt with amphipathic detergent properties used extensively in biochemistry and cell biology. It solubilizes membrane proteins and disrupts lipid bilayers, making it useful for cell lysis, membrane fractionation, and protein extraction protocols. At controlled concentrations it can preserve protein activity while aiding in the removal of lipids; however, higher concentrations denature proteins and compromise membrane integrity. Its biocompatibility and predictable micelle formation behavior make it a standard reagent for membrane-related studies.
