Introduction
GroEL of Salmonella enterica serovar Abortusequi is a highly conserved 60-kDa chaperonin belonging to the heat-shock protein 60 (Hsp60) family. Like GroEL in other bacteria, it resides mainly in the cytoplasm where, together with its co-chaperonin GroES, it assists the proper folding and refolding of newly synthesized or stress-denatured proteins. In pathogenic S. Abortusequi, GroEL is also released or surface-exposed under certain conditions and can act as an immunodominant antigen, eliciting strong antibody responses during infection. Because of its high conservation and immunogenicity, recombinant GroEL has been evaluated as a potential diagnostic marker or vaccine candidate for detecting and controlling S. Abortusequi infections in equids.
