General Description
SRM encodes spermidine synthase, a cytosolic aminopropyltransferase that catalyzes the final step of spermidine biosynthesis by converting putrescine to spermidine using decarboxylated S-adenosylmethionine. Spermidine is a polyamine essential for cell growth, proliferation, and stress resistance. Because polyamine biosynthesis is upregulated in rapidly dividing cells and in many pathogens, SRM is explored as a metabolic target for cancer chemotherapy and antiparasitic/antimicrobial intervention, and polyamine levels serve as candidate diagnostic biomarkers.
