General Description
AP-2 complex subunit sigma-1 (AP2S1) is a component of the adaptor protein complex 2, which mediates clathrin-dependent endocytosis at the plasma membrane and selects cargo for internalization. It is required for efficient uptake of receptors, nutrients, and extracellular molecules in eukaryotic cells. Mutations in AP2S1 cause familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia type 3, linking it to calcium-sensing receptor trafficking and parathyroid regulation.
