Introduction
Melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5), also known as Ifih1 and Helicard, is a cytoplasmic RNA helicase and belongs to the retinoic acid-inducible gene-I (RIG-I) family. RIG-I and MDA5 each contain two caspase-recruitment domains and a DExD/H-box helicase domain, and play important roles in the recognition of viral RNAs as part of the innate immune system. These two molecules recognize different ds-RNAs, MDA5 detects picornavirus and longer double-stranded RNAs than RIG-I detects.
