General Description
Phenolphthalein is an organic compound of the phthalein family that is widely employed as an acid-base indicator. Phenolphthalein is a potent laxative, but such adverse reactions as kidney irritation or skin rash may occur. Phenolphthalein was used widely in over-the-counter laxatives, but in 1999 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned its use in such medicines because animal studies indicated that it may cause cancer in humans.(Dunnick, J. K., et al., 1996)
