What We Do With Emerging SARS-CoV-2 Variants

Multiple SARS-CoV-2 variants are circulating globally. Several new variants emerged in the fall of 2020, most notably:

  • In the United Kingdom (UK), a new variant of SARS-CoV-2 (known as 20I/501Y.V1, VOC 202012/01, or B.1.1.7) emerged with an unusually large number of mutations. This variant has a mutation in the receptor binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein at position 501, where amino acid asparagine (N) has been replaced with tyrosine (Y). The shorthand for this mutation is N501Y. This variant also has several other mutations, including 69/70 deletion and P681H.
  • In South Africa, another variant of SARS-CoV-2 (known as 20H/501Y.V2 or B.1.351) emerged independently of B.1.1.7. This variant has multiple mutations in the spike protein, including K417T, E484K, N501Y. Unlike the B.1.1.7 lineage detected in the UK this variant does not contain the deletion at 69/70. View More

SARS-CoV-2 Nucleoprotein Antibody Pair for Rapid COVID-19 Antigen Assays

CD anti-nucleoprotein antibodies expected to detect both UK and South African variants of SARS-CoV-2. The UK variant of SARS-CoV-2 (known as VOC 202012/01, lineage B.1.1.7, or 20B/501Y.V1) has two mutations in the nucleoprotein: D3L and S235F. We have validated that our key anti-NP clones NB1, NB2, and NJ1 are able to detect the UK variant. The South African variant of SARS-CoV-2 (known as 501.V2, 20C/501Y.V2 or B.1.351 lineage) does not have any mutations in its nucleoprotein and should be detected by all our anti-COVID-19 NP MAbs.

We are pleased to let you know that we now have the first anti-nucleoprotein antibody (CABT-MMT2) which can not react with B.1.1.7 variant strain but react with other COVD-19 viral strains.

This antibody can be used for COVID-19 antigen lateral flow testing in differentiating Variant B.1.1.7 and other viral strains.
