Introduction
The Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Phosphoprotein (P protein) is a non-structural protein that plays a crucial role in the virus's RNA synthesis and replication. It functions as a cofactor of the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (L protein) and helps in stabilizing the interaction between the polymerase complex and the nucleocapsid (NP-bound RNA genome). The P protein also participates in the transcription of viral mRNAs and replication of the viral genome. Additionally, NDV P protein is involved in modulating the host immune response by antagonizing interferon signaling, which helps the virus evade host antiviral defenses. The P gene also encodes accessory proteins through RNA editing, such as the V and W proteins, which have their own immunomodulatory functions.
