Introduction
The Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Hemagglutinin-Neuraminidase (HN) protein is a multifunctional surface glycoprotein that plays key roles in viral infection and host interaction. It is responsible for binding to sialic acid-containing receptors on the host cell surface (hemagglutination activity) and cleaving sialic acid residues to facilitate viral release and prevent self-aggregation (neuraminidase activity). Additionally, the HN protein promotes fusion of the viral and host cell membranes by interacting with the fusion (F) protein, enabling viral entry. Because of its strong immunogenicity, the HN protein is a major target for vaccine development and serological diagnostics.
