General Description
IA-2 autoantibodies (insulinoma-associated protein-2) are biomarkers used to detect immune-mediated destruction of pancreatic β-cells, indicating Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) or identifying individuals at risk. Present in 50%–75% of new-onset T1D patients—often higher in children—these antibodies help differentiate Type 1 from Type 2 diabetes and assess the need for insulin therapy. Key Aspects of IA-2 Autoantibodies: Clinical Significance: They act as highly specific markers for T1D, often appearing early in the disease process.Disease Association: They are frequently associated with the HLA DR4/DQ8 haplotype.Diagnostic Use: Combined with GAD65, ZnT8, and insulin antibodies, they provide high diagnostic sensitivity for Autoimmune Diabetes (T1D or LADA).Persistence: While they can disappear over time, their presence remains a strong indicator of active autoimmunity.Test Method: Measured via ELISA or radioimmunoassay (RIA) in serum, with results often reported as an index.
