Introduction
PRSS1 is the gene that codes for cationic trypsinogen (trypsin 1), a precursor to the digestive enzyme trypsin. This protein is secreted by the pancreas and activated in the small intestine to break down proteins. Mutations in the PRSS1 gene are associated with hereditary pancreatitis, a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of pancreatitis that can lead to chronic pancreatic damage, enzyme deficiency, and an increased risk of pancreatic cancer.
