The African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) p22 protein is a structural protein encoded by the KP177R gene of the ASFV genome. It is localized mainly on the inner envelope of the virion and is believed to play a role in virus-host interactions, although its exact function is not yet fully understood. p22 is expressed during the early phase of infection and may be involved in modulating the host immune response or facilitating viral entry and assembly. While not as well-characterized as other ASFV structural proteins (such as p72 or p30), p22 is considered immunogenic and has been used as a marker in some serological studies.
