AHSV VP7 is the major, highly conserved, and unique structural core protein of the African horse sickness virus (AHSV). It spontaneously forms flat hexagonal crystalline particles within infected cells, which is a unique characteristic among orbiviruses and has implications for virus assembly, replication, and vaccine development. While VP7 is crucial for virus assembly, its insolubility and aggregation can negatively impact virus yield.
