General Notes
This product (Catalog No. CABT-BL5962) is a rabbit-derived polyclonal antibody raised against human VN1R1. It has been affinity purified by Protein A. VN1R1 is a protein-coding gene in humans that encodes vomeronasal type-1 receptor 1 (VN1R1), a putative G protein-coupled receptor with homology to pheromone receptors found in other mammals. Located on chromosome 19q13.43, the gene consists of a single exon and produces a 353-amino-acid protein featuring seven transmembrane domains characteristic of the vomeronasal receptor family. This receptor is thought to play a role in detecting pheromones—chemical signals that elicit specific behavioral and physiological responses in conspecifics—though its functionality in humans remains under investigation due to the vestigial nature of the vomeronasal organ. The VN1R1 protein belongs to the V1R subfamily of vomeronasal receptors, which in rodents mediate pheromone sensing via dedicated sensory neurons in the vomeronasal organ (VNO), influencing behaviors such as mating, aggression, and parental care. In humans, VN1R1 mRNA is primarily expressed in the olfactory mucosa, with low and variable expression reported in tissues like the brain, lung, and kidney, suggesting potential roles in chemosensory signaling beyond a functional VNO. Unlike many human vomeronasal receptor homologs, which are pseudogenes disrupted by frameshifts or stop codons, VN1R1 retains an uninterrupted open reading frame, indicating possible selective pressure for functionality. Research has identified polymorphisms in VN1R1, including missense single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that alter amino acids, observed across diverse human populations and analogous to variations in rodent counterparts. Studies in mice with targeted deletions of V1r gene clusters demonstrate deficits in pheromone-evoked behaviors and electrophysiological responses, underscoring the family's role in sensory processing. In humans, emerging evidence links VN1R1 variants to influences on socio-sexual behavior and gender-specific brain responses to potential pheromones, such as the synthetic odorant Hedione, though direct causal roles are not yet conclusively established. No specific diseases are directly associated with VN1R1 mutations, but its evolutionary conservation highlights its significance in understanding mammalian chemosensation.
